Night 5 Open Thread

Tonight on NBC primetime, Evan Lysacek unveils his short program as the reigning World Champion goes for olympic gold against Yvgeni Pluschenko, Patrick Chan, and the deepest men’s field in history.

On NBC there will also be snowboarding and long track speedskating.

On CNBC, Canada goes for hockey gold as they take on Norway.

See you in the comments

7:07 – Norway and Canada tied at 0 after the first period

7:15 – A lot of people don’t like NBC’s puff pieces, but I think they do a pretty darn good job.

7:27 – Jarome Iginla scores for Canada.

7:31 – So Yvgeni Pluschenko can skate a little bit.

7:39 – It’s 2-0 Canada now. Dick Button is awesome over on NBC. Should be in the booth.

7:47 – World Champion luger Erin Hamlin takes her final luge run. She has had tons of problems with the start, likely due to moving it down a bit.

8:34 – And Lindsey Jacobellis goes off course and has been disqualified. Shocking. Granted it was tape delayed and everyone heard about it, but shocking.

9:07 – United States and Norway curling online right now. 0-0

9:38 – Some French guy with a terrible routine, and we are sucking in curling again

9:52 – Patrick Chan alert

9:56 – I love this ah commercial. Meanwhile, Shuster with some work to do to blank the end.

10:01 – US can only get a point. Knotted at 1

10:02 – What a fucking program for Weir. That was great.

10:16 – Abbott and Lysacek still to come

10:17 – Meanwhile, the US has a chance to steal in curling

10:19 – Norway gets a point, but the US gets the hammer.

10:29 – Who’s the man? Evan Lysacek is the man.

10:32 – 2nd place right now for Lysacek, and he will have an excellent chance at gold tomorrow.

10:44 – Jeremy Abbott really crumbled under pressure tonight. Seems like a 2 man race between Pluschenko and Lysacek. Takahashi with a great chance as well.

10:50 – Shuster gives Norway a chance for a double takeout. He is not pleased.

10:52- Americans get lucky and get 2 in the end to lead 3-2

11:00 – Alright, I’m calling it a night. I’ll edit in the comments. Good night and thanks for joining everyone.

      • mrejr8234
        February 16, 2010 at 7:13 pm

he wore some fur last time right? espn was making it sound like he was getting threats from anti-gay people but i heard he was getting death threats from animal lovers.

      • February 16, 2010 at 7:40 pm

Correct. He is wearing some faux fur tonight.

      • Paolo X
        February 16, 2010 at 9:16 pm

He should have gone with the real fur in honour of Canada and its First Nations instead of the corrupted industry in the US …the fuckin’ maleducated politically-correct hypocrites especially over on the East Coast take one across the chops and one up the ass for all I care about their supposed outrage and continued horseshit agenda…those same folks insist on saying “Native American” even when you talk to the tribes and they prefer “Indian” or “American Indian” and consider “Native American” somewhat offensive …in the same offended breath none of those East Coast fucks are doing anything about the Redskins.

  2. February 16, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Why is there a photo of Adrien Brody and Kenny from the Real World’s lovechild?

    • mrejr8234
      February 16, 2010 at 7:37 pm

because you touch yourself at night.

  3. February 16, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Was My Sharona just playing over the speakers at the Canada-Norway game?

    February 16, 2010 at 8:47 pm

Men’s figure skating is so gay it should be on Bravo. Good lord.

    • February 16, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Wait until you see Johnny Weir.

      Curling on CNBC next.

      February 16, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Yeah no shit NBC has their demographics screwed up good call Mrejr.

Agreed with Fetch that not only should Dick Button be in the booth but also that he should stand in for annoying Bob Costas altogether.

ah i see parenthood has basically stolen from Modern Family

    • Paolo X
      February 16, 2010 at 9:19 pm

which stole from “Thirty Something” and the likes of the movies “Parenthood” and “Father of the Bride” and so forth other chick flicks …Hollywood recycling for the ninnies you know and that “Desperate Bitches” demographic especially on the East Coast …

Fetch wow the China Women’s Team just killed a US power play …still scoreless on CNBC …missed the Canada men’s game due to overdue grocery shopping …wow did that suck in this cold again, and these bojacks here in PA close some grocery stores at only 9PM what the heck?

    • Paolo X
      February 16, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Wow Fetch China scores whilst playing short trying to kill the power play …sorry it is Finland not USA 😛

      • February 16, 2010 at 9:53 pm

That is still incredible, Finland is pretty good

      • Paolo X
        February 16, 2010 at 11:18 pm

It finished only Finland 2 China 1 — go figure China is pretty gritty and should the Team USA women see the Fins in the medal rounds, we should be very aggressive to get an early lead.

I’d love the Winter Olympics if I could find a way to completely avoid figure skating.

    February 16, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Good lord it’s like Bret the Hitman Hart’s and The Crow’s tights joined together on Johnny Weir to form the gayest outfit ever

      February 16, 2010 at 10:15 pm

LOL dude you are on it tonight go on go on!

  10. Paolo X
    February 16, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Damnit more figure skating and it’s too late for the old folks and kids to watch …I don’t know what gives anymore? Last night the late night coverage was better than was primetime — maybe tonight too we’ll see.

    February 16, 2010 at 10:28 pm

“Meanwhile, the US has a chance to steal in curling”

Good job on the curling play-by-play Fetch. 🙂

Was this phrase stolen from “Family Feud” or is a really a curling term?

Can you say it like Richard Dawson too, minus the chicks to kiss on the lips of course?

    /Old skool game-showed for those 30+
    //Wiki it otherwise

    • February 16, 2010 at 10:46 pm

      Haha it’s a curling term.

It means winning a point when you don’t have the last shot.

  12. February 16, 2010 at 11:04 pm

Fetch, how long did it take for you to understand curling? Did you ever try it? I dont understand it, is it anything like bocce ball?

    • Paolo X
      February 16, 2010 at 11:17 pm

Ah yes bocce! Well in fact it is analogous as far as strategy Franco, but it is more complicated and has those guys scrubbing away at the ice and all.

Plus also the curlers wear somewhat ugly shirts sometimes with mustard or catchup stains on them like bowlers.

Fetch explained earlier that he’s designing a new line of curling attire to help address its fashion challenges and shortcomings not to neglect to mention of course his great work in helping educate us on the sport on here.

    • February 16, 2010 at 11:22 pm

I’ve played it quite a bit actually. Alas none of my friends played it so I abandoned it at a young age. Id like to get back into it in grad school though.

We’ve had the world championships both in my hometown and in the town where I go to school since 2000, so we have quite the curling culture if you will.

Basically the object is to get your rock as close to the middle as possible.

    February 16, 2010 at 11:19 pm

I was right about Olympics late night again — Russia 2 Latvia 0 — visions of hockey heaven on CNBC right now.

  14. February 16, 2010 at 11:28 pm

I WAS PROMISED CURLING! THERE IS NO CURLING ON MY TELEVISION SET!

    /OUTRAGE!

    • Paolo X
      February 16, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Hey Tomas good of you to stop by late night! What happened to Souvenir? I mean geez did he OD on ethanol or cornmeal or what the heck? Is he making his own hooch? Baffling.

      • February 16, 2010 at 11:33 pm

Idunno, but I’ve been at work since 9 and just got home.

  15. February 16, 2010 at 11:33 pm

Norway with a good shot there. US is going to have to hit their rock onto Norways and knock them out of the house

  16. February 16, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Another really good through by the Americans

    • February 16, 2010 at 11:37 pm

      wow. Throw

  17. Paolo X
    February 16, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Love the hockey organ …this might be as good of a hockey tournament as Salt Lake City 2002 …even Darth Cheney showed up for USA-Russia in that one mind you — that’s saying something given that guy has as much personality as either a lead pipe or a plunger …Russia 3 Latvia 0 with Ovechkin with two goals already and Latvia still hangin’ tough despite the score.

    • February 16, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Ovie only has 1. Two guys who play in the KHL have the others.

    • Paolo X
      February 16, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Correction Ovechkin one goal Federov two assists.

Jeremy Roenik and the other guy on the NBC set don’t like each other. They got into it earlier when assessing the performance of Team USA after the win 3-1 against the Swiss, with Roenik arguing that Team USA still have some work cut out for them in eliminating some slop. The other guy had interrupted Roenik, and Roenik shot back “excuse me I played for Team USA too” before continuing.

Now why can’t they take some more of the NHL fighting off the ice and into the broadcast booth?

  18. February 16, 2010 at 11:44 pm

    Extra end! Riveting stuff

  19. February 16, 2010 at 11:49 pm

US is just trying to clear the house for a Shuster draw for the win

    • Paolo X
      February 16, 2010 at 11:53 pm

What is a Shuster draw? And end is kind of like inning right?

      • February 16, 2010 at 11:58 pm

        Yeah.

Shuster is the skip (meaning he goes last) and a draw is when they just try to aim for a spot and not knock another rock.

  20. February 17, 2010 at 12:04 am

Here it is. Pressure packed for Shuster.

    • February 17, 2010 at 12:06 am

      Fuck. Norway wins 6-5

      • Paolo X
        February 17, 2010 at 12:13 am

What?! He messed up the Shuster draw? Or Norway knocked everything out and set themselves up?

      • February 17, 2010 at 12:20 am

He threw the shot too hard.

  21. Paolo X
    February 17, 2010 at 12:12 am

Over in hockey action still 3-0 Russia but Latvia with a PP now.

You can see clearly the difference in Euro hockey versus North American even on the smaller NHL rink.

There is a lot less hitting on the boards between Russia and Latvia than between the US and Switzerland. Give the Swiss credit for not backing down and dishing out as many hits as they took.

The game of hockey is still better with the international rules and the rink that is about 4m (13 feet) wider, though now at least the NHL rules are closer to the international rules.

  22. February 17, 2010 at 12:20 am

Paolo there’s speedskating on NBC right now

    • Paolo X
      February 17, 2010 at 12:31 am

Cool thanks …going to bed with that then …and flipping to the 3rd period of the hockey game too …good night see you tomorrow night
