Night 7 Open Thread

After 3 years of retirement, Evgeni Plushenko tries to defend his Gold

Welcome to Night 7 at the Vancouver Olympic games. Tonight’s marquee event is without question the men’s figure skating finals. NBC will also be featuring the final of the women’s halfpipe. Also, Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso try to add to the medals they won yesterday.

On CNBC, Canada’s hockey team plays its second game on home soil as they take on Switzerland.

See you after the jump/

7:05 – It’s 1-0 Canada after the 1st period.

7;17 – Vonn, Riesch and Mancuso are 1,2,3 after the downhill portion of super combined.

7:24 – Patrick Marleau makes it 2-0 Canada

7:28 – Couple nice chances, but the Swiss can’t convert.

7:35 – Swiss goal makes it 2-1 Canada.

7:56 – Switzerland ties it up with 10 seconds left in the 2nd!

8:00 – Snowboarding women’s halfpipe final coming up.

8:05 – Elena Hightt, the first American, dropping in now.

8:05 Elena with back to back clean 900s, but a fall on her last trick is going to be a problem.

8:09 – China’s Liu Jiyau is in 1st after her run. Tons of riders left.

8:12 – Holly Crawford of Australia stumbles, will need to improve to medal.

8:15 – Gretchen Bleiler of the US falls as well, but if she lands all her tricks, she wins Gold.

8:18 – Hannah Teter puts down a good run, doesn’t really try anything terribly difficult except a nice combo.

8:19 – And she gets a 42.4 to sit in first!

8:21 – And Kelly Clark biffs it. The Americans have some work to do to medal.

8:41 – Switzerland holds Canada to 2-2 after regulation. In snowboarding, Gretchen Bleiler will not medal.

8:46 – Kelly Clark is into Bronze medal position. Torah Bright of Australia in 1st

8:58 – In a shootout between Switzerland and Canada.

8:59 – Torah Bright gets Gold, Hannah Teter Silver, Kelly Clark Bronze

9:03 – Canada wins the shootout, Crosby with the lone goal.

9:10 – Figure skating time. US Champion Jeremy Abbott up first.

9:12 – Kind of a repeat of his short program for Abbott. Rough Olympic experience for him for sure. He had a good finish, but obviously will not medal. Good for him for not quitting though.

9:23 – Skater number two in the books. A clean run from the 3rd Japanese skater.

9:23 – In curling action, Kevin Martin of Canada made a nice shot to give them a lead over France.

9:25 – 231.19, a personal best from Takahito of Japan.

9:37 – If you can either get CTV or watch Curling online, check out Canada v. France. Kevin Martin is sick.

9:37 – Shaun White medal ceremony right now

9:52 – Canada’s Patrick Chan up.

9:56 – A good routine, but a lot of little errors and a one big one. No medal for Chan.

10:05 – Our second American when we come back.

10:07 – I’m pretty sure that’s the 10,000th time the BC, Canada commercial has been on. Lucky for them it makes me want to move there everytime.

10:08 – The US has 17 medals currently. They had 25 in the entire Torino Games.

10:19 – Lysacek with one mini wobble on a jump, but other than that he was flawless. Guaranteed medal, possible gold.

10:23 – The best free program ever from Lysacek vaults him into first. One non-perfect jump from Plushenko and Lysacek should have gold.

10:49 – Johnny Weir up next.

10:55 – One mini wobble from Weir, but that could be medal worthy. Possibly.

10:58 – Weir in 5th after the program. He got screwed. It’s all down to Plushenko. Lysacek is guaranteed a medal.

11:04 – Lysacek better win. Or else.

11:07 – He does it!!! Lysacek the first World Champion to win Olympic gold since Scott Hamilton. Every American has done so.

11:09 – Plushenko with a much deserved Silver, and Daisuke Takahashi of Japan wins the Bronze. Expect to see a strong Japanese contingent in Sochi.

11:21 – As Evan Lysacek gets the Gold medal around his neck, I think that’s where I’m going to leave it for tonight.

Russia-Slovakia hockey is on CNBC, and skeleton and speed skating is on NBC

I feel like I should pick up curling… doesnt seem too hard to make the national team. Think I could make it for Sochi?

    • February 18, 2010 at 7:45 pm

They might have mixed curling in 2014. I’m in.

I think Mancuso is cuter than Vonn, thoughts?

Both hot take your pick, but I think Mancuso is the only one who is single?

    • February 18, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Kelly Clark is hotter than both.

      OK just kidding.

      I say Vonn.

Neither are hot as Eve Muirhead though.

Vonn and Mancuso must have the same dentist and hair stylist if not also interview and speech coach …what a great hot tub double those two would be naked wearing only their medals.

  4. February 18, 2010 at 8:17 pm

I have nightclass and work tonight so I don’t won’t be able to weigh in on the events tonight ….

Nietzsche would not know the ass of a horse from his own head.

When in doubt stick with Aristotle and just keep it real. Or go with Occam’s razor. πŸ˜€

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:12 pm

you probably did the same thing I did when I set up Beadlemania to make it mobile-friendly.

Fetch Canada and Switzerland in a shootout now after 2-2! Wow the Swiss are for real and with Canada I smell blood! Go Team USA!

  6. February 18, 2010 at 9:12 pm

    Is it the weekend yet?

    /today sucked.

    • February 18, 2010 at 9:15 pm

      Yes!

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Do you not have classes Friday? Or are you agreeing that today sucked?

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:23 pm

I have one class, but it’s at 10 and I just go there and don’t pay attention.

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:27 pm

I envy you. I really only have a 5 pm class tomorrow (Spanish) but then have a gymnastics meet to cover — No. 4 UF vs five-time defending national champion No. 7 Georgia.

        /end shameless plug

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:34 pm

I will be watching olympics all day. Have fun.

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:39 pm

I will have fun! Gymnastics is surprisingly captivating, plus UF-UGA is a huge rivalry in the sport, too.

      February 18, 2010 at 9:15 pm

      Why what happened Tomas?

This week sucked but I prevailed in two unrelated insurance battles that drained me of mental energy. One largely only because several bojacks in Washington could not figure out how to pass a health care bill, assuming of course that is really what they wanted to do anyway I as believe it was not.

I’ll sleep well tonight for sure.

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:19 pm

After interviewing gymnasts this afternoon, I had to go to class for a test review, only to realize I forgot to submit online the assignment (online submission only) that’s worth 10% of my grade in that class. So I had to skip the review, bus home, submit the assignment, then go to my Spanish class… which of course the professor kept us like 10 minutes late when I had to go home and write an article for tomorrow’s paper that was due at 7. When all was said and done, I had to file my article 10 minutes after deadline.

Oh, and I need to find a new roommate for the Fall because my current roommate wants to live somewhere he can have a dog next year.

        /end rant

      • Paolo X
        February 18, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Wow Tomas …well at least you took your lumps all in one day without it all dragging out?

        But were the gymnasts hot?

Hopefully next week is a better luck of the draw so to speak.

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:26 pm

As a professional, I will have to refrain from answering that question. But I’m not complaining about having to interview people. It’s the shitstorm that happened the rest of the afternoon that was frustrating.

  7. February 18, 2010 at 9:15 pm

    sup yall.

  8. February 18, 2010 at 9:17 pm

so right now we have men’s figure skating and women’s hockey? what a sausage fest.

  9. Paolo X
    February 18, 2010 at 9:37 pm

I know there has been too much figure skating on TV when I start to have uncontrollable thoughts of serious accidents happening to them like flying randomly into the boards. 😦

  10. February 18, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Good to see Shaun White have so much fun with the anthem

  11. February 18, 2010 at 9:43 pm

two teardrops doesnt make you anymore hood, french guy.

    • February 18, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Too bad Lil Wayne didn’t read that comment and take note of it.

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:51 pm

weezy is awesome and not french. hes allowed to have them.

      • February 18, 2010 at 9:58 pm

nothing against weezy… just sayin’ that teardrop tattoos are overplayed, despite their supposed meaning/significance

      • February 18, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Teardrop tattoos are dumb, and so are French people.

Do they cancel each other out?

      • February 18, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Naw, Fetch, I think they actually increase the dumbness exponentially. If they were polar opposites then they would cancel out, but since they are both dumb, it only magnifies the dumbness.

        /science

      • Paolo X
        February 18, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Actually having nothing against French folks other than some snooty Parisian types as I do for just about any snobby folks from just about any capital city including Washingtonian fucks, it was still funny to see that clip of that French skiier crashing and going off course only about 10m out of the gates!

I sent it to you Fetch and hope you got it! πŸ˜€

  12. February 18, 2010 at 10:32 pm

TV post your Brian Boitano video.

      February 18, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Fetch, you should have gone with the flag to honour your Norwegian roots early on. It would have been good luck for the weather over there you know.

Also I think it is why you prefer blondes too and are in love with Eve Muirland. I think she’s spicier than Vonn or Mancuso too.

I’m out going home from work now, so see you on Olympics late-night!

      • February 18, 2010 at 10:37 pm

That probably is why I like blondes. Good call, Paolo.

        See you for late night.

  13. February 18, 2010 at 10:46 pm

far as i can tell the two major trends in mens figure skating this olympics are clowns and being asian no matter what nationality you are.

      February 18, 2010 at 11:28 pm

Let’s see then if they all carry European shoulder bags/manpurses/murses when off the ice?

And they are probably great drivers on ice but terrible otherwise too.

10:07 – I’m pretty sure that’s the 10,000th time the BC, Canada commercial has been on. Lucky for them it makes me want to move there everytime.

On a CFL forum, the Canadians were making fun of the name “Super Bowl” and could not understand why it was not named the “Lombardi Cup” or something more prestigious-sounding like their Grey Cup.

Today I got even with them by telling them about the slogan to that BC commercial airing in the States: “Super, Natural British Columbia” πŸ˜›

Bring it on Sunday Canada bring it on …GO TEAM USA! πŸ˜€

    • February 19, 2010 at 12:25 am

Ha. I’m glad you’re in the nationalistic spirit. Can’t wait for Sunday.

    Russia 1 Slovakia 0:
Interesting player on Slovakia whom I did not know about — Zdeno Chara.

    http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=12748/index.html

You would think he is just some goon on ice, but he’s Captain of the Boston Bruins and stands 6-9 257 as the tallest player in the NHL.

I doubt there are many heavier, and he carries a 66″ stick for which he had to get special permission from the NHL for a waiver of the length restriction.

    February 19, 2010 at 12:47 am

Slovakia still playing it tough in a defencively well-played and physical match …now I wonder about Russia as well as Canada, and the Czechs and USA look like they might be the best teams — I will check out Sweden and Finland in their games tomorrow to learn more.
