Day 8 Open Thread

Chandra Crawford goes for cross country Gold live from Whistler

Right now the US Women’s Curling team tries to give the US their first win of these games. Later in the day, John Shuster will try to do the same for the men.

On NBC at 2pm Central time, Canadian Chandra Crawford goes for her 2nd career Gold in cross country skiing.

And on MSNBC at 2, Sweden looks to go 2-0 in hockey.

See you in the comments.

11:19 – Russia blanked the 1st end.

11:24 – Evgeni Plushenko’s coach said that Plushenko was “robbed of his destiny” by “criminal judges.” So that’s something.

11:36 – US lead (and former University of North Dakota student) Natalie Nicholson has been the best lead, percentage wise, in the tournament. That gives you an idea of how bad the back half has been.

11:45 – Russia’s 3rd and skip have switched spots, with bad results. United States steal in the 3rd end to give them a 1-0 lead.

12;09 – Russia forced to take one. US with the hammer now.

12:42 – The US goes up by 2. Russia with the hammer in the 7th

12:54 – Russia takes two right back. The US needs to either take two here, or try to blank twice and win in the 10th.

1:05 – Well, they only take one. US up by 1, going into the 9th.

1:31 – McCormick is a terrible strategist. This is embarrassing.

1:37 – And with two in the 10th, the US wins 6-4, giving them their first win of the Olympics.

3:22 – We are halfway through the 30k mass start, and just a half hour away from more curling.

3:44 – Marit Bjoergen wins the 30k mass start.

3:44 – US Skip John Shuster will not play today vs. France. Alternate Chris Plys will skip, Jason Smith will throw last rock though.

3:48 – In hockey, Belarus cuts Sweden’s lead to 1. Just 8:27 left.

3:53 – For the record, I absolutely don’t agree with benching Shuster. He has been bad, but France is awful. Good shot to get his confidence back.

4:14 – France blanks the first end. 0-0

4:27 – Another blank

4:47 – Another blank. 0-0 after 3

5:01 – 1-0 France after 3. Hell of a shot by the French skip

5:17 – Jason Smith with a crazy good shot to tie it at 1

6:01 – Blank end. US has the hammer in the 9th down 3-1

6:26 – Jason Smith with 2 ties it up. To the 10th, France with the hammer.

6:48 – Smith needs a clutch shot here.

6:50 – Perfect! France needs to put it exactly in the right spot for a win.

6:52 – And the French skip has the right weight, but rubs a stone to give the US their first win. Whew. Medal hopes still semi alive, but they’re at about a 1% chance.

That’s all for the day thread, see you for primetime in about 10 minutes.

Why, hello, Russian women’s curling team…

Looks like I will catch the later part of the hockey game between Sweden and Finland to check out their play when I get to work at 4PM East Coast time then …

Hey Fetch did you catch the Team Canada men’s curling uniforms last night? Even the dude with the bald horseshoe look on top looks sharper than our guys.

I was right when I told you it was a fashion emergency for Team USA men’s curling, but the good news is Fetch can help them through your connections to our Canadian friends.

And then of course with improved self and public image you can help them work on that bowling alley diet, fitness, and their overall game.

Again I expect a status report on my desk at 0600 ET the 7th of every month.

Don’t just do it for yourself Fetch or for them, do it for curling and country!

Maybe I’ll just try to be on the curling team for 2014.

I’m thinking this for our shirt

      • February 19, 2010 at 2:01 pm

I’m down. When do we start training?

        Fetch, Tomas,

I offer my material support as well as financial when I can get back into that in Florida guys.

In the meantime the first two rounds are on me should you pull it off subject to my approval of the apparel, as the example would indicate, general fitness level, and total image.

Clear image or fashion violations are for discussion at another time, but in the meantime note that several indictments have been made in all my blog posts since 2008.

And we are not doing it merely for ourselves remember. It’s for curling and country!

I totally agree…what an awesome shirt. I never got around to learning after the Torino games…what a perfect time to learn now!

Fetch also I want to try out for the play-by-play and be your curling team’s PR manager and press secretary and entertainment director…

I’ll be diplomatic in public like a smiling glib politician yet of course make sure to take on the trash talkers on your behalf and that of our country at the events so you all can focus on winning the matches.

Team USA curling not playing well and not looking much better in the red shirts, but those do hide the ketchup stains.

The black pants and shined shoes do look sharp though.

Fetch can you translate what they are saying in French for us?

    • February 19, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Haha. I know zero French. Sorry Paolo.
