Night 8 Open Thread

The 3rd of 4 skating events is the main attraction from Vancouver tonight. Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto try to get the United States, and in fact North America, started towards their first ice dancing Gold. Also for the Americans are the country’s champions, Charlie White and Meryl Davis. Russia has their usual strong contingent of teams as well.

Also on NBC there is skeleton, where the US could grab a medal, led by former world champion Noelle Pikus-Pace.

In women’s curling, undefeated Canada tries to stay that way against Denmark.

And in men’s hockey, the Czech Republic is already up 3-0 on Latvia.

Stop by and comment.

7:08 – Two of the three Americans will qualify for the final round in ski jumping’s large hill.

7:19 – From TMZ: Snowboarder and Bronze medalist Scotty Lago is headed home early after some risque photos surfaced

7:22 – Evan Lysacek interview up next.

7:29 – Once again, Lysacek extremely gracious, while Plushenko looks like a cockbag.

7:34 – Tomas Kaberle scores to make it 4-0 Czech Republic over Latvia. They have a great shot to win their pool.

7:41 – The first Georgian athletes are competing right now, an ice dancing pair.

7:46 – Not bad. They’ll be back in 4 years.

7:54 – That was quite the wipe out

7:59 – Dont look now, but Latvia has made it 4-2 after the 2nd

8:12 – Bode Miller “currently” in 1st.

8:27 – Norway’s Svindal wins Gold. Bode Miller will finish 2nd.

8:47 – Great piece on Apolo Ohno. The Czechs are going to win 5-2.

Dinner break time.

9:12 – And we’re back. And just in time to see White and Davis do their compulsory dance

9:23 – Canada women’s curling is on CNBC. I’m not quite sure how to tactfully describe their skip, so just flip over and watch.

9:33 – Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto up next.

9:45 – Well, with Belbin and Agosto done, I think that’s all for me for ice dancing tonight. Back to curling.

947 – And Great Britain is playing. Expect a slew of updates.

9:58 – Ha, I could listen to the Scottish accent all day.

10:04 – Uh oh. 4-1 Japan after 4 ends.

10:13 – Skeleton on NBC right now

10:24 – Great Britain now just 1

10:28 – Williams of Great Britain wins skeleton Gold. Noelle Pikus-Pace finishes 4th, just .1 out of Bronze

10:31 – It took me awhile, but if you look at the top of the page you now have easy access to my medal predictions.

10:33 – I think I’m going skeletoning tomorrow. Skeleton + curling = double gold in Sochi

10:44 – Bernard in trouble now. In happier news for Canada, Jon Montgomery has won Gold in men’s skeleton

11:00 – With Britain down by 2, I think I’m going to leave it.

Be sure to stick around for late night though, as Bob Costas will interview Stephen Colbert, and Finland takes on Germany in hockey.

Cracker Jack is there any female competitor whom you think is hotter than Lindsey Vonn (again, of course not homo)?

Also, which ones do you think are overrated?

Welcome again great to see you here. 🙂

Decrypted message – damnit Fetch we got busted, so I have to ‘fess up:

Paolo X to Fjordman, Paolo X to Fjordman …don’t tell them whether you speak French or not just play it off and pretend …these are some fine folks here participating and eavesdropping on this forum you know not a bunch of boobs and rubes like on some other blogs …they come here for Olympic insight and entertainment, and they don’t know French either, so just give them a good show because …

The rest was lost in cyberspace for all eternity, but it was only some chickenscratch about the new concession stand menu selections at your local bowling alley.

Wow…people need to loosen up…i can think of 1000 things worse he could have done with his medal..oh wait it’s HIS medal who give a damn what he does with it?

    • February 19, 2010 at 7:40 pm

I agree. I understand the whole thing that you should be more reserved at the Olympics, but 1. He’s a snowboarder and 2. He’s done competing.

Right on Mrejr …these are the same folks quick to call “outrage” and feel “offended” when they are really not only to put on appearances for sake of their lame-ass media jobs in front of their puppetmasters. Remember the Randy Moss fake mooning episode or Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction for example?

I am far more offended by all the folks going on and on about how offended they are than I am but anything of the sort.

In fact I just think it’s funny and hate sanctimonious media fucks typically in Washington and New York when something of the sort happens …on that note did you see this on Terrell Owens…someone will probably be “offended” by this too:

Anyone know much about the cat fight between Vonn and Mancuso? My mom mentioned itt and favours Vonn. Links?

I just want to watch and don’t care I like them both.

Will they use their hands and nails, ski poles, skis, or other weapons?

Insert below any other fantasies with casual indiscretion please.

I hope NBC would broadcast any cat fight between the two…it’ll be better than most of Costas’ fluff pieces…think that Vonn has the best photo on NBC’s website though.

So that “Georgian” skater lives in the U.S and has never stepped foot onto Georgian soil? Makes sense.

It happens in the Olympics and in global competitions more than is reported …also note when folks change nationality a few years before the games with accomodation on an expedited basis by any given Second, Third, etc. world country’s political regime.

  7. February 19, 2010 at 8:15 pm

I found myself disappointed earlier that Charlotte Kalla fell during the cross country double. It’s like all the research I had done on cross country skiiers had finally hit me and I was legitimately pissed off when she fell 25 seconds back.

    I swear I’m not gay

We believe you Franco no worries …

Perhaps this calls for an introspective from Dr. Paolo:

“Sometimes my children, despite our best efforts we misplace our priorities …and sometimes, well, it just doesn’t matter damned if you do damned if you don’t, so then of course not giving a shit is sometimes the prudent strategy.

So go forth my children nonetheless and let your light shine whether you are full of shit or not. Amen.”

That whole arena is rooting for Latvia. Say this for the US, they’ve been sloppy for sure, but they haven’t been dominated at points like the Czechs, Russians, and Sweden has in parts of the game.

    • February 19, 2010 at 8:49 pm

I’m hoping it’s because they don’t have the familiarity factor yet.

        February 19, 2010 at 8:57 pm

I can’t remember ever a day like coming this Sunday with THREE awesome matchups!

So far last night’s games between Canada and Switzerland (3-2 Canada after 4 rounds of a shootout) and Russia and Slovakia (2-1 Slovakia after 7! rounds of a shootout) were the best.

Slovakia and Latvia might be a good game tomorrow too.

    • Paolo X
      February 19, 2010 at 8:52 pm

The Czechs appear so far to be the best team, but they have their weaknesses as for the most part they underplayed Latvia for the 2nd period and matched them for the 3rd period.

Other than fans like me of this Hockey Heaven, it is also an NHL Recruiting Combine.

I cheer for the guys from the smaller programs with hardly any foreign exposure or few players with NHL experience, such as in Latvia or Switzerland, who have shown the goods already in Vancouver and will earn an NHL contract after the tournament.

    Hot curling chick update:

The Danes have two hot blondes yet the Canadians have the slightly hotter Cheryl Bernard.

Fetch, when you go out with Muirfield I’ll wing for you with Bernard — deal?

The commentator stated that the Danes changed back to skirts (with hosiery underneath) from pants this morning after a woeful loss in them after a win a skirts yesterday.

In line with the superstition, they ought to just go bare with the skirts or put on some Danish red thongs. In that way we would all be guaranteed more than one Olympic moment.

Skeleton is the most batshit crazy “sport” ever.

How does this chick find a medal when she was all over the walls?

I like skeleton better than luge 🙂 And I’ll never understand doubles luge with men.

      I like the sign by John Daly’s fans (the skeletoner): J M F D

I doubt I am amongst few who can live with never understanding why they have ice dancing AND figure skating pairs.

I don’t get MSNBC with my free Dish Network TV, for which until tonight I could care less because it’s merely the East Coast left wing and prison channel otherwise.

So perhaps like me as a big Olympic hockey fan you installed Microsoft “Silverlight” in yet another bureaucratic PC ordeal just to watch video on your PC?

Only curling on CNBC late night and no Olympics on USA now.

Stephen Colbert in the mountie uniform was not funny, and I’ll never understand Mary Carillo’s casting. She seemed okay for women’s tennis years ago, but for the Olympics late night from the studio or in the life pieces I don’t get it at all.

Explanations to any of these relatively meaningless mysteries of late night TV are welcome. 🙂

Finland 2 Germany 0 both Finland goals on the PP. You would think you are watching an NHL match with all the hits. Finland are controlling possession and are really impressive.

    • February 20, 2010 at 12:18 am

Yeah Finland looks good. Germany is awful, so we’ll get a better picture tomorrow when they play Sweden.

  14. February 20, 2010 at 12:06 am

    Johnny Weir is straight? Get-da-fuck-outta-here.

You tell me this interview he’s doing right now is anything other than gay and I’ll shank you, all of you.

      February 20, 2010 at 7:22 am

Sounds like a great PR and media strategy to me as he is lining up already his next “career” (aka FLOP!), as otherwise he would just be the next Adam Lambert, Clay Aiken, or whatever happened to those “Queer Eye” douches …such dudes in media circles have a daily expiration date with a limited, largely gay urban enclave and suburban demographic … the strategy won’t work for too long but in trying to play it ambiguously gay, perhaps with the strategic use of an old Hollywood standby, the beard (and fool no one in this day and age), he’s just copying the likes of Liberace for sake of wooing more of the likes all those bojacks, rubes, and boobs who love to shop at Wal-Mart mostly between the coasts in what the arrogant New Yorkers will call “Middle America.”
