Day 9 Open Thread

Sadly, we are past the halfway point at the 2010 Olympics. To make it up to you, we have tons of great curling action on the way. The US men, who got their first win yesterday against France, try to go back to back against a tough test from Sweden.

On NBC at noon, women’s aerials takes center stage as American Emily Cook goes for the US’s 4th medal of the freestyle skiing events. Also on NBC, Petter Northug of Norway, the biggest trashtalker in cross country skiing, and possibly in these Olympics, leads Norway on a quest for team pursuit Gold.

Over on CNBC the American women go for their 2nd win of these Olympics, and right after that on MSNBC Slovakia takes on Latvia in hockey.

Oh yeah…..and John Shuster is back in. Enjoy.

11:11 – Shuster’s first stone clips the guard. Rough start.

11:14 – Shuster’s 2nd shot much much better. Sweden has an opportunity for a double takeout, but it’s not easy.

11:20 – Jason Smith with a clutch clutch shot. Sweden might get it stolen from them in the first end.

11:21 – Sweden almost made a triple, but the US steals to go up 1-0

11:44 – With another steal, the United States goes up 2-0 after 2 ends.

11:57 – Sweden forced to take just 1. US up 2-1 after 3.

12:14 – The US takes 2 to go up 4-1 over Sweden.

12:28 – At “halftime” the US leads 4-3.

12:49 – The US can only take one, but lead 5-3

1:04 – Yuck. Sweden with a 3 end, and they take a 6-5 lead.

1:09 – And it appears the defending Gold medalist in women’s aerials will not make the finals.

1:18 – Nice blank there from the Americans. 2 ends left, and they are down 1 with the hammer.

1:40 – Jason Smith with a HELL of a shot, and the US is up 1, going into the 10th.

1:44 – Here’s a good story. 16 year old Ashley Caldwell, the future of US women’s aerials, qualifies for the final

1:55 – Sweden ties it with a clutch draw, and the US takes the hammer into the 10th

2:17 – Smith with the United States shot of the tournament to win it! The US grabs their second win, and medal hopes are still alive.

2:21 – In hockey, Switzerland is up 1-0 on Norway, and the conclusion of ski jumping is on NBC

2:26 – No Swiss athlete has ever won 4 golds. No ski jumper has ever won 4 golds. Simon Ammann can do both in an hour.

2:27 – Vikingstad (yes that’s his real name) scores to make it 1-1

3:01 – Hansen rifles a shot past Jonas Hiller to make it 2-1 Norway

3:48 – Sorry folks my remote broke, so I just spend the last 45 mins or so fixing it. The mens cross country combined event is about a fourth done.

3:51 – Oh yeah, and Simon Ammann just won the Gold. Most Golds by a ski jumper in history, most Golds by a Swiss athlete in history.

3:59 – Continuing the good vibes for the Swiss, they get a power play goal to go up 4-3

4:01 – IT’S EVE MUIRHEAD TIME!

4:06 – Norway’s Vikingstad with a goal to tie it at 4

4:17 – Muirhead hits it on the nose and takes 1. Good end for the US

4:25 – Switzerland scores in OT to beat Norway. What a great great great game. There’s a hockey player from Norway named Vikingstad. Unreal.

4:28 – Debbie blanks the end.

4:42 – Great Britain steals 2 from the US

4:57 – McCormick forced to take 1

5:13 – The US steals a point now and it is a brand new ball, er, curling game. GBR up 1 after 5 ends

5:39 – The US steals another point, and we’re all tied up. It’s about to get good folks.

5:55 – Muirhead with a great shot to put GBR back up by 2. Big big end here for the United States

6:38 – Up 1, Muirhead has a throw for the win. Just needs to nudge the US stone.

6:39 – And she hits the guard!! We go to an 11th end. Britain keeps the hammer.

6:50 – Colleen Jones is basically calling Muirhead all sizzle and no steak.

6:55 – Here is Muirhead’s last shot….Needs a perfect draw to win.

6:56 – Muirhead misses! Medal chances still alive for the Americans. This seems like a good time to leave it. See you in primetime.

Preach ohnn sista cracka! Hey if you look at the bottom of last night’s post, the rumour about the cat fight between Mancuso and Vonn has been confirmed. 😀 Mom was right …again. 😛

      • cracker jack
        February 20, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Yeah I read that, Paolo. Sounds like Vonn is getting jealous Mancuso is stealing some of her thunder. Rock that tiara, Julia!

      • February 20, 2010 at 1:46 pm

        watch your language, young lady.

That may or may not have been sarcastic

Fetch, I want to know what strings you pulled to get that Shuster back in? Norwegian or otherwise of course.

Did you find me drowning his sorrows over a pitcher of Pabst Blue Ribbon, nachos supreme with generic-brand cheez-wiz, and two non-kosher hot dogs at the bowling alley snack bar?

What happened to turn things around for Shuster and Team USA?

Did you provide overdue fashion assistance too along with a shirt change due to those condiment stains on him recurring more than my posts about them?

Will you frame his condiment-stained shirt now?

Enquiring minds here demand to know.

    • February 20, 2010 at 1:48 pm

From what I understand, the decision to take him out was always just a day off.

I think having him in the 3rd spot is good, as it gives him some less pressure shots, but having him skip is good cause he is a really good strategist.

Also, in a shocking story, his fiancee is pretty cute

    February 20, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Sorry Fetch. Got a little hot there. Anyway after this curling match I am looking forward to the womens 1500 tonight, a girl from my husband’s high school is competing.

    • February 20, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Ah ha Sista Cracka right on …well your husband seems to be a lucky man then too, and Fetch give her a break please, because if you are dishing out some heat it is okay because of course that means you are kind of spicy too and you know what I think about spicy gals. 😀

Okay, poll of the day: Eve Muirhead or Nicole Joraanstad?

    Mccormick sure Schuster’d that.

    February 20, 2010 at 5:55 pm

From a commercial standpoint with the substantially Wal-Marted US television viewing market demographic (and dominant voting public for that matter), I think NBC’s strategy of devoting heavily the air time to curling and figure skating will work.

From the standpoint of the experience of the average viewer instead of that targeted audience of mostly moms, some kids, and seniors who can’t wait for 60 Minutes every Sunday night, it sucks ass unless you happen to be a real fan of either.

/Can’t Get Any Hockey Action On TV Or Online (At Work) Today 😦

    February 20, 2010 at 6:19 pm

I’ve now watched at least four hours of curling and I still don’t understand whats going on.

    February 20, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Vikingstad would be the best commenter name ever.

        February 20, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Blasphemy. Ruin the months I’ve spent building the TST brand? Pushing back the line of energy bars alone would cost me thousands.

      • cracker jack
        February 20, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Is this picture on the label of your energy bars?

      • Paolo X
        February 20, 2010 at 6:41 pm

Welcome TST …leave him alone Fetch damnit you remember what happened last time you chased him out of here …yeah right damnit let him build his brand …he’s an original and no bojack, parrot, ninnie, douchebag, or homer like still too many you know. 😀

What energy bars TST? I’ve been a guru of those since I have been on a high protein low sugar diet. 😀 Anything without peanut butter like too many of them have please.

      • February 20, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Well TST, maybe I will then. I’ve debated changing it to Shuster’d too

      • Paolo X
        February 20, 2010 at 6:53 pm

        I vote for “Fjordboy.”

    • Paolo X
      February 20, 2010 at 6:44 pm

      Slam dunk Sistah Cracka lol!

And jinxed you owe me a …energy bar? 😀

      • cracker jack
        February 20, 2010 at 6:44 pm

I like Clif bars the best

      • Paolo X
        February 20, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Those are good like many of them …if you have to keep your sugar down like me (not diabetic but don’t want to be), the selection is so much more limited though and Clif bars and others in the supermarket are out. 😦

The best one I have eaten is Titan, Chocolate Cookie (not dough) Flavour, 😀 from GNC.

Myoplex is good too and some others I can’t remember because I just grab them by the dozens where I find them.

Hey Sistah Cracka it’s great you are spicy but I hope you did not scare off TST?

      • cracker jack
        February 20, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Oh I dont think TST scares easily. I will have to try the Titan, I have not heard of that before and I agree most bars are just too sweet.

      • Paolo X
        February 20, 2010 at 7:04 pm

“I will have to try the Titan”

Sistah Cracka please be careful how and where you say that you know, as in shopping for them at the GNC you could run into some Ron Burgundy type, coming off a lame workout and trying to show off his flabby guns to hit on you, who will respond cordially:

“Why yes I bet you will …indeed let me introduce you to him …” 😀

Where is that Spicy Sista Cracka? We need her opinions and rants here too, especially on the question of Muirfield versus Joraanstad posed above …

  15. February 20, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Alright kids, primetime post is up. I am going to go grab dinner before it gets too far into it.

Cracker jack, the picture was selected especially for you and the husband.

    • Paolo X
      February 20, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Jinxed again you owe me an energy bar too Fetch!

I am hungry now and have to eat too! Wow this must be my day?
