Day 12 Open Thread

Debbie McCormick and the US women try to defeat defending World Champ China

Day 12 Already? Wow. First, our awards from last night:

Bronze – To the ice dance team of Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, who should have won bronze, but without them the teams who won Gold and Silver probably wouldn’t have even been there. They have advanced the sport of ice dancing by leaps and bounds in North America and have made the United States a contender for Olympics to come.

Silver – To Petter Northug Jr. of Norway, the best cross country skiier in the world, who finally won a Gold medal in these games yesterday in the team sprint.

Gold – To Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who put down a Gold medal worthy routine in ice dancing….and probably would have won had the competition been in Seattle and not Vancouver.

Today on USA network we we get it started with the US Women’s curling team, who need a win to keep (super slim) medal hopes alive. Their opponent? Only the defending world champs from China.

Then on NBC at 3 ET/2CT some rare afternoon speedskating, as the 10,000 meters gets underway. Also,  biathlon and team nordic combined, as the US goes for their first medal in biathlon and their first team medal in nordic combined.

Also at 3/2 on USA, the hockey quarterfinals gets underway with Switzerland facing Belarus, with the winner facing the United States.

See you in the comments

2:03 – And I’m here. Time for women’s ski-cross qualification. Canada brings  a very very strong team, but it is France’s Ophelie David who is the favorite.

2:14 – David of France is in with the #1 qualifying time

2:16 – Smith of Switzerland, just 17 years old, now has the fastest time.

2:18 – Canada’s Serwa into second. In hockey, Belarus has a 1-0 lead on Switzerland.

2:28 – Switzerland ties it at 1 on the power play

2:32 – Little break in the skicross here, so I’ll stick with hockey for a little bit.

2:47 – Nedelcu of Romania falls on that last jump, and clocks in about 5 seconds behind the leader. Just .21 behind the last qualification time. Sad.

3:05 – Switzerland takes a 2-1 lead.

3:40 – The United States team is going to have a great great chance for a medal here. They’ll go out right behind Finland.

3:46 – Sven Kramer missed a crossover in the 10,000 meters, and will be disqualified. His time was 2 seconds under the winner’s time, but Kramer will not win Gold. Sad sad for him.

3:58 – Great save there by Jonas Hiller. He’s been playing really well for the Swiss.

4:27 – Switzerland and Belarus in OT. OT in knockout games is 10 mins sudden death, then shootout.

4:37 – Ten minutes of OT not enough, so we go to a shootout.

4:40 – Swiss start out with a score.

4:41 – Belarus with a miss.

4:41 – Swiss make it 2-0. Belarus needs a goal to stay alive

4:42 – Clutch. What a sick goal, too. 2-1 Swiss

4:43 – Next shot saved! Belarus needs to score again.

4:43 – He can’t jam it in and Switzerland will play the US tomorrow afternoon!

Switzerland will be no pushover should we play them again and they play solidly today. Any team that takes Team Canada the distance would seem to be quite strong.

Or will Belarus pull what I say is an upset though not akin to that of Sweden in 2002?

Unless the Swiss are blown out today a la Finland were on Sunday night, maybe this is the best Swiss hockey team of all time and I don’t see how it would not be stronger for 2014.

Fetch whilst things are slow, I hope you read the articles I sent you last night. Also ratings for last Wednesday 02/17 night turned out to be solid, with NBC beating American Idol for the first time since 2004.

NBC still is set to lose $200 million on these games — so much for their programming strategy of seemingly at least 50% of prime-time and cable for figure skating events, curling, and “human interest” fluff including especially with the tired likes of Mary Carillo.

I guarantee we fans will get a better deal for 2014 or no deal at all and just watch online a la carte.

The hockey game on MSNBC was the 2nd most watched program ever on MSNBC. The first was election night coverage in November 2008 and only by the thinnest of margins mind you!

Convinced now that the hockey game should have been on NBC other than this ice dancing bullshit? Consider that when The Winter Classic, a game of far less importance and on only because college football is not what it used to be on New Year’s Day, is on NBC too. NBC fuckers!

I just want to say that I will be in class for awhile, so probably no updates to the liveblog until 2 oclock.

I’ll try to make it up to you guys.

yea you better make it up!!!

No seriously though, i’m watching this Swiss/Belarus game and holy shit the more i watch this hockey it is obvious this difference is quality between teams like these and USA/Canada/Russia ect…..

It was a physical game, and I knew in watching it when I tuned into the 3rd period that whichever team won Team USA will have to play physical and score early. Team USA did that the first time around to beat Switzerland 3-1. I say we have to score 3 by the end of the second period and hopefully allow none.

Like Canada if you let Switzerland drag things out and throw it into a shootout and you leave too much to chance.

No doubt …it’s harder to score in hockey too for sure.

i hear that man. Too bad my alma mater couldn’t figure that out in the national championship this year when the kid blasted one over the goal on the 5th shot of the shootout in the college cup.

        /still bitter
//no way in hell should a NC be settled like that.

That last attempt by Belarus in the shootout was the worst effort i have ever seen in Hockey. Terrible.

Oh PL like in the Canada-Switzerland game believe me they were far worse …it went to the fourth round before Canada scored to win
