Night 14 Open Thread

The US has 20 minutes to erase a 2-0 defecit

Tonight Vancouver hands out its medals in one of the marquee events: ladies figure skating. Japan’s Mao Asada and Korea’s Kim Yu-Na sit in the top two spots and are overwhelming candidates to win Gold.

Elsewhere, there is more aerials action, and the largehill portion of the men’s nordic combined.

Also, the US women’s hockey team is down 2-0 going into the 3rd period playing 5 on 8, so help cheer them on.

8:05 – Some Canada skater fell. Pardon me while I grab a tissue.

8:12- Mary Carillo is Miss Canadiana now? Does she eat a bunch of maple syrup and hide behind superpowers?

8:23 – Mens aerials on now. Jeret Peterson up now.

8:26 – By the way, I bigtime Shuster’d my first Blogs  With Stones matchup and lost 3-1. The guy I played was pretty damn good, too. That didn’t help.

8:38 – Back to the ladies free skate in a bit. Kim Yu-Na should be going soon.

8:51 – Australian Cheltzie Lee scores a 138.16 total. A personal best for her. Good for her.

9:00 – Ryan St. Onge with a pretty good jump there.

9:05 – After going into the finals with the lead, no Canadian will medal. A Shustering! Keep the meme alive people!

9:06 – Speedy Peterson just landed the hurricane. Sick. Just sick.

9:08 – Peterson and St. Onge are currently 1 and 2. Lots of good skiiers left though.

9:10 – Jia Zongyang is into 3rd. Petersen and St. Onge 1-2.

9:15 – Aleksi Grishin is into 1st.

9:15 – Kyle Nissen of Canada is in 5th. Speedy Peterson takes silver. His first career medal.

9:19 – Coming up the last 6 ladies figure skaters.

9:42 – You just saw the end of the nordic combined large hill race. Americans Bill DeMong and Johnny Spillane go 1-2

10:07 – Rachael Flatt up first in the final group.

10:10 – Canadians are so humble and welcoming. Not. (h/t to sportsgal)

10:13 – Not shocked to see Rachael Flatt get screwed. Into 2nd place, most likely won’t medal.

10:25 – Kim Yu-Na is going to win Gold in ladies figure skating. If she doesn’t, the judging is crooked as hell.

10:31 – Oh yeah: That was a record for Kim Yu-Na. Hell of a performance. You’ll be seeing that in montages for 20 years.

10:35 – That’s how you answer. Japan’s Mao Asada probably won’t win Gold, but she seems a slam dunk for a silver.

10:41 – Rochette with a couple sizable goofs. She probably won’t medal.

10:45 – Never underestimate the stupidity of figure skating judges. Somehow Rochette is in 3rd. Un fucking believable.

10:48 – Mirai Nagasu’s mom has cancer. There has been one mention of it.

10:50 – Nagasu was great. She’ll be one of the favorites in 2014. She better medal here as well. But won’t because of the shameful judging.

10:55 – Unbelievable.

11:01 – Does Andrew Koenig (Boner from Growing Pains) have any kids? They can come pick up their Bronze medals now.

11:16 – via twitter.com/breakingnews: the IOC will investigate the Canadian women’s hockey team, who drank alcohol on the ice after their Gold medal win. Marie-Philip Poulin, who scored both of Canada’s goals, is underaged.

11:20 – Mainly just recap stuff on the late night show. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Congrats to the Canadian ladies, they played a fine game.

  2. February 25, 2010 at 8:40 pm

Fetch- Can you answer why they aren’t doing reverse order for the ladies figure skating? Rochette going to second to last? American going last? is this home cooking?

Men went in reverse order and no Canadians were involved.

    • February 25, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I think they group them into groups (so the last 4 or 5 is the last group) and they draw for who goes last. But yeah, as to why I am not too sure.

I would be bracing yourself for Rochette to medal.

      • February 25, 2010 at 9:56 pm

The must group them in 6s since Nagasu is going last and she was 6th. Still seems pretty shady to me. Every other event goes in reverse order if there are two parts except this one and when a Canadian is in contention?

Not impressed Vancouver. Not impressed at all.

      • February 25, 2010 at 10:17 pm

I thought Nagasu was in 5th for some reason. My bad.

And this is just the latest shady thing that has gone on in Vancouver. I’m sure my recap of these games won’t get me too many Canadian fans.

Remember last night’s comment of “Eurotrash,” which when asked Jeremy Roenik had confirmed but this report states it was Mike Milbury who said it not Roenik.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/NBC-analyst-Mike-Milbury-not-a-fan-of-Russia-s-?urn=oly,224135

Covering the rest of the games together with Roenik, who hates him as you could tell from the initial coverage, will be A-W-K-W-A-R-D.

    • February 25, 2010 at 8:59 pm

I don’t think anyone ever said it was Roenick, Paolo.

        February 25, 2010 at 9:09 pm

Last night I did and others concurred, so I am not sure everyone caught that part so I set that part straight to make sure.

      • February 25, 2010 at 9:58 pm

Imagine the outrage if Milbury called the Americans “White trash”. I wish Roenick would punch him in the face

Great point RS, and that’s what a lot of our fellow countrymen are missing in that such talk has no place at an international competition. On a blog fine, fire away if that is one’s opinion but not if employed to be there.

I read on some other blogs hypocritical stuff like “big deal man, that PC crowed is out of control this is bullshit man …” but damn right the shoe would be on the other foot if we Americans were called on air by a foreign media type something like “Ameritrash” or “American swine” these same folks would have totally different tune and rightfully so.

If only folks could be consistent and not hypocrites on such matters. 😦

And Americans wonder why we have a bad image overseas including of course as “the ugly American” tourists?

Mary Carillo in all fairness has decent presentation skills, but why she is the lead for coverage in the studio makes no sense to me. She’s not even remotely interesting either.

I think NBC’s coverage of these games has been skewing to three demographics in large part: Retirees over 60, young moms/ninnies/MILFs, and Gen Y’s 10-25 years old. Just watch the daytime or primetime ads for the most part if in doubt.

That’s rather brilliant demographic marketing though still a money-losing initiative at Minus $200M for NBC.

NBC’s definition of “success” sounds like it was coined by those losers in all senses over at MSNBC. Except that slick “To Catch A Predator” dude maybe.

Here’s a fine piece on what the games would be like on ESPN:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/25/sports/olympics/25television.html

Hopefully with ABC having layoffs they let most of that ESPN “talent” go too before they cover the games and just contract folks out as did well NBC.

You should send that video link to TBL and hot clicks tomorrow. I like how Americans get pointed as being rude. Canada can go to hell. To think I was super close to moving there 5 years ago.

    • February 25, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Done and done. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah I always wanted to move to the BC area. Maybe a nice remote area in Norge sounds better.

I would go in two months to Alberta to work in even the oil fields now if there were enough work …the winter weather is about the same as here this year, so I can hack it though colder for longer …plus you know you get the free health insurance there for whatever you pay in taxes unlike here where you get pretty much just some highways for that nowadays 😦

Otherwise I am off to Florida enough’s enough of moving around.

You know as BC is a stoner haven of sorts, the folks over there at that site might like that clip too. What if that loud bunch were just a bunch of buzzed stoners? 😛

I make no excuse for the F*** the USA chant. We have ignorant, drunken idiots here too. I don’t think anyone claimed otherwise.

However, I’m going to have to pull the hypocrite card on Fetch here. I distinctly recall you making F*** Canada comments on a TBL WJC thread after the U.S. won. I wasn’t personally offended because people say crazy shit in the heat of the moment. I think you might want to extend the same courtesy here.

You’ve also been a little over the top with the anti-Canada stuff the last couple of days. It’s one thing to cheer for your country but it’s something different to try to diminish almost every accomplishment another country by insinuating there is some grand conspiracy in place.

Again, I’m cool with it because at the end of the day it’s just internet noise. Just my two cents.

    • February 25, 2010 at 11:22 pm

how is me saying fuck Canada (and really it was just the people who acted like the WJC was their tournament) in one internet comment akin to a group of people jumping around in the streets yelling it?

Quit taking logic classes from TBL

      • Paolo X
        February 26, 2010 at 12:37 am

Just apologise for it Fetch if you really did not mean it. You don’t have to lower yourself to the level of a bunch of drunk and/or stoned Canadians, as clearly GG is solid not to do that as well.

As far as sorry-ass TBL well …never mind …I’ve said enough about that for now…

  7. Garland Greene
    February 25, 2010 at 11:30 pm

I’m just saying that the sentiment is the same. For whatever reason, you were moved to make the same type of statement. Who knows what prompted this group of idiots to do what they did? Could have been a case of dealing with an obnoxious U.S. fan? Who knows. As I said, I disagree with anyone making those kind of comments about any other country. When you make comments like that your painting a group of loosely connected people with the same brush and that’s wrong.

My main point is that you can’t really been indignant about someone making that type of statement when you’ve done the same. I don’t think the medium you used changes the nature of the remark.

It’s all good though. The majority of what you’re throwing up here is good stuff.

11:16 – via twitter.com/breakingnews: the IOC will investigate the Canadian women’s hockey team, who drank alcohol on the ice after their Gold medal win. Marie-Philip Poulin, who scored both of Canada’s goals, is underaged.

I heard about this a couple of hours ago. One of the sports radio stations said they asked her about it and she didn’t realize you have to be 19 to drink in B.C. She’s from Quebec, where the legal drinking age is 18. I don’t buy that excuse but it’s really a non-issue either way. I’m sure the IOC will make some kind of grand proclamation but it doesn’t change the result of the game.

      February 26, 2010 at 12:40 am

GG this is stupid they should stop acting like Puritans c’mon they won the gold medal! I do buy her excuse — even though from a different province she’s in the same country and would not care at that age.

I sure as hell didn’t and neither did most of my peers at that time here in the US where it was 21 everywhere but Louisiana at the time.
