Day 16 Open Thread

The pants go for curling Gold against Kevin Martin and Canada

Welcome to the final day of full competition from Vancouver. Before we get to today’s action, my awards from last night:

Bronze – The US men’s hockey team, who defeated Finland and advanced to the gold medal game on Sunday.

Silver – To the women’s speedskating team pursuit. They defeated Canada in the quarterfinals and could get an unexpected medal, as the Canadians were the overwhelming favorites.

Gold – To the US men’s speedskating team pursuit. In the semis they pulled an even bigger upset, defeating the Dutch, who had Gold medalist Mark Tuitert and Sven Kramer, who is perhaps the best skater in the world. They go for Gold today against Canada.

Right now on USA is the Bronze medal curling match. Switzerland currently leads Sweden 1-0 after 1. Here is the other action:

NBC (1/12): Women’s speedskating team pursuit bronze and gold medal matches. There is also snowboarding and cross country skiing.

CNBC (6/5): The men’s Gold medal curling match, featuring Norway and Canada.11:40 – Sweden and Switzerland are now tied at 1 after 2 ends.

11:41 – Sweden is going for a triple. This will be awesome.

11:41 – And he made it! Wow what a shot for Sweden. Shot of the tournament probably.

11:45 – Switzerland has to settle for a blank. Still tied at 1

12:05 – Switzerland takes 1 and now leads by one after 4.

12:17 – The curling play by play guy just said Swiss miss. As in the hot chocolate brand. This is why we need the Olympics more often.

12:24 – At the 5th end break, it’s a one point lead for the Swedes.

12:50 – Men’s PGS is over on NBC right now. Sweden and Switzerland are tied in the 7th in curling.

12:54 – Due to the earthquake, the Chilean Olympic team will not take part in tomorrow night’s closing ceremonies.

1:05 – After 7, Sweden leads 4-3

1:21 – Switzerland plays for the blank, so we go into the 9th with Switzerland down 4-3

1:40 – And the Swedish skip Niklas Edin just made a quadruple knockout. Remember when I said his triple was the shot of the tournament? Nevermind.

2:00 – Switzerland wins the Bronze with 2 in the 10th end! Great job by them, although Sweden will definitely be a Gold medal favorite in 4 years.

2:14 – In the last cross-country race, a couple Norwegians are close to the front, but it’s Poland’s Justina Kowalczyk who leads.

2:26 – Charlotte Kalla (Sweden), Marit Bjoergen (Norway) and Justina Kowalczyk (Poland) are the three leaders now

Women’s speedskating team pursuit coming up.

2:41 – The US team lost to Germany, even though Germany’s last skater fell across the line. Embarrassing.

3:11 – End of the 30k coming up. Cross country skiing is strangely riveting.

3:15 – And Poland’s Justina Kowalczyk is the first Polish Gold medal winner in cross country, and the first ever Polish woman to win a Gold medal in the Winter Olympics period. She just edged Marit Bjoergen of Norway. AK Saarinen of Finland takes the Bronze.

3:27 – Kikkan Randall just had probably the best Olympics ever for an American cross country skiier. No medals, but it is a good start for looking forward to Sochi.

4:05 – Canada wins gold in the men’s speedskating team pursuit. US with the silver. Unexpected medal for the Americans.

4:41 – The US takes 4th in the women’s team pursuit. Both disappointing and surprising (in a good way). Weird race there.

4:52 – I am so disappointed that our 18th tier athletes might get less Golds than Canada’s 1st and 2nd tier athletes. Disappointing.

4:55 – Yep, these montages get me every time.

5:19 – Blanked 1st end in the men’s gold medal curling match

5:33 – Canada forced to take one in the 2nd. Norway is going with the strategy to blank here. I am no curling expert (although I do curl! Hooray!) but I like this strategy: shorten the game against the best team in the tournament.

5:35 – If you do not want to see the results of the 4 man bobsled, do not highlight the next line.

The famed “Night Train” sled of the United States has taken Gold in the 4 man Bobsled. Germany takes Silver and Canada Bronze

5:37 – The Canadian women’s team is in the house, and got  a nice ovation for their Silver.

6:07 – The pants are in trouble here folks.

6:11 – After 5 ends, it’s 3-0 Canada. John Shuster is going to be interviewed next, so tune in.

6:36 – Norway gets 2 back. Canada has the hammer now, but we have a game here folks.

6:47 – And Canada gets 2 back in the 7th to take a 3 point lead.

Alright, night time post is going up. Feel free to move it on over there.

Due to the earthquake, the Chilean Olympic team will not take part in tomorrow night’s closing ceremonies.

Well duh! And it makes you wonder how many have even stayed given really how many are still competing but perhaps a less than a handful at most?

Norwegian Question For A Slow Day:

If any one of the Norwegian curlers farts in a healthy manner in those pants, which of the following occurs?

    A) Some of the diamonds on them glow and flash temporarily

    B) The diamonds re-align and all folks remain oblivious

    C) Invisible brown cloud and light skid marks on the ice

    D) One of the stones or the ice shows a small crack in it

    E) Nothing — they just blame it on the judge

      haha!

I hope you stick around to comment even after the Games are over.

Sure I’ll be around thanks. I don’t know how much to discuss on this site, but on the other ones sure …an early thanks for the chance to be here and have fun with everyone too Fetch. 😀

Now enough of the mush back to some serious jokes and farting around — not necessarily mutually inclusive or exclusive of course.

when did women’s speed skating turn into doggy paddling. That skater just did the most retarded thing i have ever seen done crossing a finish line.

This might have been when JPQ was in his prime in the clubs who knows?

what up Paolo, i got laid last night! that is all i got today, man. It is boring here today, i can’t really watch the cross country skiing, i’ve had my fill of college hoops and i’ve been starring at my gat damn TV for 2 hours now waiting for this tsunami to hit. Obviously, i dont want anyone to get hurt but i want to see this shit live. They’ve been saying it could happen at any moment since 11:00!!!

Woh dude you got laid? Cool great work!

Yeah they are milking another damn “ALERT!” for ratings those fuckers …the only good thing about it for me was watching the clumsy cultural differences between East Coast fuckheads and the nice kama’aina …it’s mildly amusing to watch city slickers talk about what they know nothing about and not realise they look and sound like bigger media dumbasses and phonies than they are already.

  8. February 27, 2010 at 3:59 pm

weird and speaking of powerade. I just had 2 of them this morning for this fucking hangover. I’m on the powerade sour melon kick (green). shit’s the bomb! better than any gatorade i’ve ever had.

I drink Powerade Zero, with no sugar or carbs, due to dietary desire and requirements. I still can’t figure out why it is so much harder to find low-sugar stuff in as much variety on the East Coast than it is in grocery stories on the West Coast. No wonder there are so many douchebag fatasses and ninnies around here.

The stores used to always run out of the grape flavour until the last few months. The orange one is the best but most don’t carry that. The other Zero flavours suck. Also I like Vitamin Water 10 (calories) too.

goddamnit!!! i turn over to the olympics for literally 2 minutes and the first wave hits. fml…

    Norwegian Question Part 2:

Fetch I am watching the curling final now, and I was hoping you could translate for us not only their fashion sense but also what they are saying?

    • February 27, 2010 at 7:04 pm

      Fashion sense = awesome.

I don’t speak Norwegian though. Sorry Paolo.

        February 27, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Hey Fetch no wonder these two teams are in the final. They look sharp so of course they will play well. Our guys looked like bowling alley leftovers and played …well …like they rolled out of a gutter each morning after a few too many. 😦

I think the Canadians beat your Norwegian brothers though on fashion and look militaristic and sort of like they know how to party and get drunk, even “horseshoe-do,”, but your Norwegian brothers beat them on the hair and of course we know who they really are now anyway and they will get all the chicks now too.
