Day 17 Open Thread

Today we take a look back at the last 17 days of competition from Vancouver

Last night’s awards:

1. To Kevin Martin, who erased 8 years of curling pain to win the Gold medal he wanted so dearly

2. To Kikkan Randall, who had perhaps the best showing ever for a US Olympian in cross country.

3. To the United States 4 man bobsled crew, who won the US’s first Gold since 1948.

Today is the men’s 50k cross country race, perhaps the most important race in the cross country program. Look for Peter Northug to make a charge for Gold.

But of course the event you are all waiting for is the Gold medal hockey game, featuring Canada and the United States. The US goes for their first gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980, and they do it 50 years to the day that they won their first Gold, the 1960 games of Squaw Valley.

See you in the comments.

11:30 – The 50k is underway. How great of a name for a Norwegian is Odd-Bjorn?

My medal predictions for this race were:

Gold – Lukas Bauer, Czech Republic

Silver – Alexander Legov, Russia

Bronze – Georgio di Centa, Italy

11:38 – I feel like I am qualified to do heart surgery after that lesson by the announcers.

12:11 – We’re after the second lap. No one has separated yet.

12:21 – A pair of Norwegians are 1 and 2 right now. Jean Marc Gaillard of France lost the lead pack after having his binding separate from his ski.

12:24 – I guess it was Gaillard’s ski-tie. My mistake, everyone.

12:25 – It looks like Sundby of Norway has separated from the pack a little bit.

12:26 – Big crash there. Couple of Italians involved.

12:32 – And we are at the halfway mark. Sundby still in first. A couple of Swedes right after him.

1:10 – The race is about 80% done. Still 20 skiiers or so in the lead group.

1:36 – Peter Northug wins the 50k. Hell of a race for the best cross country skiier in the world.

2:40 – Jonathan Toews makes it 1-0 Canada. His first goal of the tournament.

2:43 – PP to Canada. Tripping on Bobby Ryan.

2:52 – 1-0 Canada after 1.

3:10 – Penalty to Ryan Malone for having the audacity to check a Canadian player.

3:12 – Couple nice shot blocks there by the Americans and a nice save by Miller on a good chance by Joe Thornton

3:14 – United States on the power play now. A Canadian must have brought a gun onto the ice.

3:16 – Corey Perry makes it 2-0 Canada.

3:27 – With a little wrister, Patrick Kane makes it 2-1. We got a game now folks.

3:34 – I guess they’re giving the goal to Kesler on the deflection.

3:40 – End of the period and it is 2-1 Canada. The US played much better in the 2nd.

3:55 – 3rd period underway. Early faceoff in the Canadian zone.

4:02 – Some nice saves by Miller there. USA needs to get more pucks on net.

4:48 – Parise scores with less than a minute left!!! USA ties it at 2 with 24 seconds left.

4:34 – Overtime. I don’t know if I can take it.

4:55 – And the best player in the world wins it for Canada. Hell of a tournament by the States.

They just showed that guy Don Cherry on NBC here in the US. It’s the first time I have ever seen him and probably that same for many fellow Americans. Wow is he the shit! We need a guy like that for every sport down here!

Don’s a good guy. He says some crazy non-PC shit from time to time but he supports the game at the grassroots level like nobody else.

I see him almost weekly at local arenas doing minor midget (15 years old players) scouting with his son. Signs a million autographs, gives advice to kids and always has a smile on his face.

He also does a ton of charity work.

Wow these are the best OT rules too! 1) 4-on-4 2) Long change rule 3) 20 minutes!

Sudden death too? How is it different in NHL for OT?

  12. February 28, 2010 at 4:53 pm

This is awesome! Dont know if i like the 4 on 4 overtime, but whatever. Either way its intense.

Those overtime rules rule (except that result of course)! They should be standard at every level of play but with less time for other rounds of course.

That winning goal was no different than a basic give-and-go/back door pass play in basketball or soccer. Solid playground stuff with an Olympic shot. 😦

Canada earned it. I wish rematch in 2 years instead of 4. 😦

I don’t know what Canada did to hold us up in all from scoring more exactly. They matched up with us so well as expected.

Maybe they watched a lot of film from our games with Switzerland and Finland to study our weaknesses and strengths respectively.
