US Wrestling Trials to be held in Iowa City

It is the site of the most successful NCAA wrestling program in history, and now Iowa City, Iowa will be the site of the 2012 Olympic wrestling trials. The site of the University of Iowa beat out fellow Iowa city Council Bluffs and Columbus, Ohio. The University of Iowa averaged over 8,000 fans per home dual match last year, and they drew a record crowd when around 16,000 people saw them defeat Iowa State.

The trials will be held in April of next year, and they will feature roughly 600 wrestlers. Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where the trials will be held, is currently undergoing a $47 million renovation.

Other cities who bid were Greensboro, North Carolina; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Hampton, Virginia and Pontiac, Michigan.
