Munich To Bid For 2018 Winter Games

October 7, 2009 1 comment

No city has hosted both the summer and winter games. If things go their way in 2011, Munich will be come the first. The third largest city in Germany with a metro area of just over 5 million people notified the IOC of their intentions yesterday. Of course, the 1972 Munich games will be remembered for something entirely other than the competition. One wonders whether that will be a positive, a negative, or have no impact.

Pyongyang, South Korea and Annecy, France look to be the two strongest contenders right now, but Thomas Bach, the head of Germany’s olympic Association is confident in their bid.

The winning city will be chosen in July 2011, 13 months before the London summer games.
