Night 12 Open Thread

Finland starts with a 2 second lead in nordic combined

Night 12 in Vancouver. Tonight could be a big one for the United States as the team nordic combined competition ends. The United States has never won a team medal in nordic combined, but they will start second, just 2 seconds after Finland.

Also beginning tonight is the ladies ice skating competition. The world will be watching Mao Asada of Japan, and Kim Yu Na of South Korea, whereas the American darling in this competition is 17 year old Rachael Flatt. But the broadcast will likely be focused on Canadian Joanie Rochette, whose mom died of a heart attack just two days ago.

Of course, if you are so inclined you can flip to CNBC and just watch hockey all night.

6:54 – Joe Thornton makes it 1-0 Canada a little over 10 minutes in.

7:08 – Canada up 1-0 after 1

7:09 – Cheltzie Lee of Australia just skated her best short program ever. Good for her.

7:16 – In 2 man, er, woman, bobsled, Germany just set a track record.

7:29 – So, Shea Weber just fired one through the net. Interesting.

7:32 – Even with a couple bumps against the wall, the 2nd USA sled is into 2nd. The other USA sled is in 7th.

7:35 – Jarome Iginla scores. 3-0 Canada.

7:50 – 4-0 Canada. Looks like we’re getting Canada-Russia

7:53 – Well, Germany scores to make it semi-interesting.

8:17 – Sorry I was MIA there for a bit. I was partaking in an online curling tournament known as Blogs With Stones. You’ll be happy to know your fearless leader went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the finals on Thursday.

8:32 – Nordic Combined final starting right now. US hasn’t won a team medal…….ever. The event started in 1924. As in the first Olympics ever.

8:50 – And Austria will win team gold in nordic combined, but the United States with a great effort to hang on for silver. Good for them. Germany takes bronze.

9:28 – It’s 2-0 Czech Republic. They’re on a power play with 5 left in the first.

9:35 – Two United States sleds are tied for first right now in 2 woman bobsled.

9:44 – Last night of women’s curling for the US, and they have a lead on Switzerland.

9:51 – The two favorites for Gold in ladies figure skating are next.

9:54 – Marai Nagasu, a 16 year old American, currently leads the event. There are two groups left however.

9:58 – Japan’s Mao Asada vaults way into first. Co-favorite Kim Yu Na is up next.

10:07 – Well that was short lived. Kim Yu Na with a world record short program, and now SHE is in first.

10:14 – Second round of the Giant Slalom on right now. Bode Miller was DQed in the first.

10:16 – USA and Switzerland tied at 3 in the 5th end. US with the hammer.

10:22 – Switzerland steals three in the 5th. Yikes.

10:28 – Canada’s Joannie Rochette up next.

10:33 – Rochette into 3rd after the short program.

10:37 – Czechs up 2-0 after 2 over Latvia.

10:41 – USA’s Rachael Flatt up next.

10:44 – With a personal best, Flatt moves into 4th place. She had a better program than Rochette I thought, but don’t begrudge the judges for trying to give Rochette a medal.

10:52 – Miki Ando of Japan is the last skater to go.

11:00 – Ando into 4th

11:02 – And the women have to concede against Switzerland. Last place for the men and women.

11:07 – Latvia scores to make it 2-1

11:15 – Latvia scores!!! 3:00 left. Turn on CNBC right now.

11:29 – David Kreijci scores to give the Czech Republic the win in OT

That’s all for me tonight folks. Slovakia-Norway next on CNBC, biathlon over on NBC

What’s she watching? Maybe it’s better until the next hockey game.

Canada-Russia tomorrow wow! Talk about another day of hockey heaven!

Two more games tonight on CNBC too. 😀

Note that the game on MSNBC, opposite fuckin’ ice dancing, was the 2nd highest rated program on sorry-ass MSNBC of all time. The first was election night when Obama won, and he barely edged out that game? Anyone else want more ice dancing on primetime?

I sent Fetch some articles about the whole deal late last night after calming down from my furor on this idea that our country would put fuckin’ ice dancing ahead of USA Hockey!

      • February 23, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Paolo: Ice dancing outdrew the hockey game. By a wide margin.

Yeah because the old fogies don’t have cable and thought it was kids practicing for Halloween.

      • February 23, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Ha well that may be, but in any event it confirms that it was the right decision by NBC

        February 23, 2010 at 9:29 pm

NO! CNBC or USA are actually on more TVs than MSNBC due to MSNBC’s exclusion in some basic satellite plans. They figure if you have CNN and Fox News why would one need MSNBC? Exactly!

Otherwise fine you happy? You got your damn ice dancing on more TVs have a drink on me.

Definitely thanks for your contribution Mrejr. I hope you catch some hockey after your niece goes to bed if you like that. Otherwise, what’s on?

Czech 1 – Latvia 0 is like an NHL game with its pace and physical play. Lots of solid hits already and almost two fights. No old people are watching this game either because it is on CNBC.

Hey where are Franco, PL, and TST? Are they hockey fans too or are we alone in that regard Fetch?

I mourn still for my country’s decision to choose ice dancing over it’s new Millercle on Ice. :((

Disgraceful and no wonder we are in the shitter outside of sports.

As we near the end of the 1st period in the hockey game, let me thank Fetch, on behalf of all participants to this fine forum, for working with his people to ensure not only snow for this Olympics but also the use of Zamboni machines instead of those piece-of-shit imposters that don’t work.

Rumour has it that his middle name is Bjorn too.

if the hockey game was on NBC and ice dancing was on cnbc i think hockey would have trounced ice skating

    • February 23, 2010 at 9:48 pm

well that’s true, except for the fact that if hockey were on NBC you likely would have gotten cutaways for human interest pieces and checks in on other events.

Fetch, did you hear about that quarry in Scotland that is running out in a few decades of the special blue granite required for curling?

If not, no big deal because who is to say what is going to happen five years from now let alone that long.

But if they do run out of that granite, what will replace it? Frozen turds?

    • February 23, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Well there is granite that they’ll take from other places I’m sure.

After that they’ll need to go synthetic, with probably just a little granite on the bottom so it slides true.

    • February 24, 2010 at 2:30 am

frozen turds?? i’m all for this, babyyyy!!!!

/i was working tonight or i’d be all in for the olympic hockey talk
//even though i would have done my best attempt of acting like i knew what i was talking about

For this hockey game in progress, it has been a solid game and is barely not 3-2 Czech instead of 2-0.

    • February 23, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Yeah, the US has to be feeling confident about facing Switzerland and then either Finland or Czech Republic

Should be 4-2 …the Latvian goalie who last name begins with M is having a Miller time in the 2nd period with no goals allowed.

22 saves on 24 shots on goal at only about halfway through the game.

Damn I am pulling for Latvia. They are doing everything right defensively and controlling possession but just can’t get good shots off enough. Lots of trash talking starting again with the Czechs getting frustrated.
